Your marketing can have a huge influence on how successful your Startup will be. With that in mind, here’s a quick startup marketing checklist to help you to get off on the right foot!
Begin With Your Problem Statement
No matter what kind of business you’re launching it’s important to clear about the problem you’re setting out to solve for customers. Take some time to clearly define the problem that you’re going become the best in the world, at solving.
Understand Who Your Customers Are
There’s no point trying to sell your service to the whole world because not everyone will need it. Identifying exactly who you target customer is will help you to design great solutions that they will value, as well as marketing campaigns that will resonate.
As part of your startup marketing checklist, write down a list of who you think your potential customers will be and then refine the list by describing them in detail. Why would they be interested in what you’re offering, what’s the problem that you’re going to solve for them and specifically – where are you going to find these customers?
Do Your Market Research
No matter how well you think you know the industry you work in, or the problem that you’re setting out to solve – nothing can replace real market research. Do your homework online to find out about the trends in your business area, what your competition are doing and charging. What kind of marketing are other companies using and are their websites easy to use and navigate?

Customer research doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but it can be the deciding factor in the success or failure of your business. Choose a Strong Brand Name
When you choose a brand name for your business, it’s important to make sure that it’s one which will stand out and resonate with your target customers. Ideally you want a brand name which is:
-Totally different from your competitors
-Helps to communicate what you do / service you offer
-Is easy to remember
-Will people be able to pronounce and spell it
-Is currently available as a business name
-That you can secure the web domain and social media profiles for
Setting up some Startup marketing basics
Your Website Domain
If it’s available, make sure and secure your web domain straight away. It can be a good idea to secure the “.com” and any local variation such as “.ie” or “.com.au” depending where your business is located. Ideally your domain name will be identical to your business name, or as close as possible (while keeping it short).
Your website is going to be one of the first places that prospective customers and partners will go to learn more about your business. For that reason, make sure and set it up early – even if it’s just a simple landing page.
There are so many great DIY tools available today that you can do this yourself by using platforms such as wordpress.com or Square-space (check out YouTube tutorials to learn how). Alternatively you can employ a freelancer or marketing agency to help you – however as a Startup you should probably be aiming to keep your costs to a minimum..
Branded Email Address
Once you’ve purchased your website domain / URL – you’ll be able to set up a branded email address. While it’s ok to initially send emails from a gmail.com or hotmail.com account, the reality is that people will take you much more seriously if you have a branded email address (with your company name). As above, this is also something you can do yourself (check out Google Suite) or you can employ some external help.
Your Company Logo
Your logo is going to be one of the key elements of your visual brand identity. Make sure that you choose a logo which reflects the personality of your brand and helps to catch people’s attention. The great news is that there are some great DIY logo tools such as Canva.com. You can also check out online marketplaces such as 99Designs and Fiverr.com if you’re on a budget.
If you do decide to use a freelancer or an agency, make sure and ask to see some of their previous work and to search for online reviews. That way you’ll have an idea about whether their style and the quality of their work is a match for your expectations.
Develop an Awesome Value Proposition
Your Value proposition is a powerful and important statement for your business. It’s essentially a short paragraph that describes:
-Who your business is
-What you do
-The value that you can offer to customers
It’s worth spending some time on your value proposition as it will be the key that unlocks the door to new partnerships, customers, marketing campaigns and sales.
The best approach is to keep your Value Proposition as short and as clear as possible. When you have a version that you like, make sure and test it out with colleagues, friends and even potential customers. Their feedback is gold-dust so don’t skip it.
Social / Professional Network Profiles
Whether you plan on posting social content immediately or not, securing your social accounts is a key part of the Startup Marketing Checklist. Make sure and secure your business Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, Vimeo and Google+ accounts (this should only take about 20 minutes). Depending on whether you plan on selling to consumers or businesses, you may also want to secure Facebook and Instagram profiles etc.!
